A working military base at the south end of Copacabana beach, Fort Copacabana (Forte de Copacabana) opens its grounds to the public. Within the base are two attractions: the Army Historical Museum, known on site as the Museu Histórico do Exército, and the coastal defense fort that gives the complex its name.
The fort dates from 1908. It is a listed heritage asset of IPHAN, Brazil's national heritage agency, and is also protected by INEPAC, the heritage institute of Rio de Janeiro state.
