Funded jointly by the international shipping community and the Hong Kong government, the Hong Kong Maritime Museum occupies Central Pier 8 on the Hong Kong waterfront. It is a non-profit educational institution founded in 2005, and it reopened to the public in 2013.
Its subject is the sea: the development of boats and ships, maritime exploration and trade, and naval warfare. The displays concentrate on the South China coast and its neighbouring seas while also tracing global trends, and they tell the story of Hong Kong's growth as a maritime city. Alongside semi-permanent and special exhibitions, the museum offers interactive displays and educational events, and it has a café and a shop.
