Works from the Maeda family collection, previously housed at the University of Tokyo, form the core of the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art (石川県立美術館, Ishikawa Kenritsu Bijutsukan), the main art gallery of Ishikawa Prefecture. Alongside them are some of the prefecture's most important cultural assets and works by artists with a connection to the region.
The museum, also known as IPMA, stands within the grounds of Kenrokuen Garden in Kanazawa. It first opened in 1959. When the collection outgrew its original building, a new facility designed by the architect Hiroyasu Tomiie was built and completed in 1983.
The permanent collection is large, and only part of it is on display at any one time, so the works on view vary from one visit to the next. The museum suits visitors interested in the art and cultural heritage of Ishikawa Prefecture.
