Former Dutch East India Company warehouses in Jakarta's old Sunda Kelapa harbor area house the Maritime Museum, known on signs as Museum Bahari. Opened in 1977, it tells the story of Indonesia's maritime history and of how much the sea matters to the country's economy today.
The displays bring together models of fishing boats and other maritime objects from different parts of Indonesia. Among the highlights are the Pinisi schooners of the Bugis people of South Sulawesi, which still make up one of the last sea-going sailing fleets in the world.
In January 2018 a fire caused by an electrical short circuit destroyed much of the museum, and the objects inside were evacuated after the blaze.
