Javan wayang puppetry is the sole focus of the Wayang Museum (Museum Wayang), founded in 1975 and holding a collection of about 4,000 items. Wayang is the traditional puppet theatre of Java.
The museum is in Kota Tua, Jakarta's old town, and is one of several museums and galleries facing Fatahillah Square. Its neighbours on the square are the Jakarta History Museum, the Fine Art and Ceramic Museum and the Kota Post Office art gallery.
