The Bank Indonesia Museum occupies the building that served as the first headquarters of De Javasche Bank, the central bank of the Dutch East Indies. After Indonesia gained independence, that bank was nationalized as Bank Indonesia in 1953. Bank Indonesia later founded the museum here, opening it on 21 July 2009. Signs may show its Indonesian name, Museum Bank Indonesia, and it is also known as the BI Museum.
The heritage building is listed as a cultural property of Indonesia. It stands in Jakarta Old Town, next door to the Mandiri Museum, so visitors interested in banking history can see both museums together.
