Built for Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Austria on a rocky spur above the Gulf of Trieste, Miramare Castle (Castello di Miramare) is the white seaside residence he shared with his wife, Charlotte of Belgium, before he left to become Emperor of Mexico, where he was executed in 1867. The architect Carl Junker designed the castle, and construction began in 1856.
The historic apartments keep much of their original furnishings, around two thousand objects in all, including paintings, books and period furniture. Maritime themes run through the rooms, reflecting Maximilian's naval career, and his study recalls the cabin of a ship. Some rooms were later refurnished in the 1930s for Prince Amedeo, Duke of Aosta.
Around the castle lies a large park laid out to Maximilian's wishes, planted with trees and plants from many parts of the world and open to views along the coast. The castle draws more than 300,000 visitors a year, and many pair the rooms with a walk through the gardens.
