Modern and contemporary art fills Villa Alsberg, a townhouse on Museumplein designed in 1904 by Eduard Cuypers, nephew of Pierre Cuypers, the architect of the Rijksmuseum and Amsterdam Central Station. It was one of the first privately owned residences on the square and remained a private home until 1939.
The Moco Museum, short for Modern Contemporary Museum, opened in the villa in 2016. It is an independent museum with further locations in Barcelona and London. It was founded to reach broader and younger audiences and to make art accessible to the public, which suits younger visitors and those new to contemporary art.
