Housed on the Aarhus University campus in the Midtbyen district, the Museum of Ancient Art (Antikmuseet) began in 1949 as a professor's study collection in classical archaeology. It is devoted to the art and cultural history of the ancient Mediterranean, above all Ancient Greece, the Etruscan civilization and Ancient Rome.
The founding collection combined 500 artifacts from the ancient Mediterranean cultures, donated by the National Museum, with plaster casts of antique sculptures from another Aarhus museum. Since the present exhibition area opened in 1971, purchases, gifts and donations have greatly expanded the holdings.
The new galleries and the growing collection allowed the museum to reach beyond university students, and it took its current name at that time. Today it serves a general audience as well as students of classical archaeology.
