The Museum of Applied Arts in Poznań (Muzeum Sztuk Użytkowych) displays its collection inside the Royal Castle, which was built in 1249 as a residential tower for Prince Przemysł I of Poznań. Part of the rooms in the reconstructed royal residence now hold the museum's displays, and the castle also has a lookout tower.
The collection numbers some 11,000 objects, including fabrics, furniture, glass and silver. They are arranged chronologically, so a walk through the galleries runs from the Middle Ages to the present day. This layout suits visitors interested in how everyday and decorative objects changed in design and craftsmanship over the centuries.
The museum is a branch of the National Museum in Poznań. It opened in 1965 as the Museum of Arts and Crafts and took its current name in 1991, when its collecting profile was broadened and its exhibition was redesigned.
