Historic aircraft and aircraft engines fill the Polish Aviation Museum (Muzeum Lotnictwa Polskiego w Krakowie), which stands on the site of the former Kraków-Rakowice-Czyżyny Airport. Austria-Hungary established the airfield in 1912, making it one of the oldest in the world. CNN has listed the museum among the world's best aviation museums.
The museum opened in 1964, a year after the airfield closed. For most of its first half century it displayed its exhibits in four of the old airfield's hangars. These buildings were never designed for the purpose and were poorly heated in winter. A new main building opened on 18 September 2010. The museum is recognised under Poland's cultural property protection.
Classed as both an aviation museum and a military museum, it suits visitors with an interest in aviation and military history.
