The Shanghai Art Museum (上海美术馆) occupied the former clubhouse of the Shanghai Race Club. The building stands on the western edge of People's Park, north of People's Square, on ground that was once the Shanghai race course. The museum was the original home of the Shanghai Biennale, which Fang Zengxian, then its director, founded in 1996.
Founded in 1956, the museum moved in October 2012 to the China pavilion of Expo 2010, on the former Expo grounds, and was rebranded there as the China Art Museum. Visitors seeking the institution today will find it under that new name at the old Expo site rather than in the race club building.
