A former gasworks building in Hjorthagen, in the Norra Djurgårdsstaden area, houses the Stockholm Transport Museum, known locally as Spårvägsmuseet (literally "the tramway museum"). It traces the development of public transport in the Stockholm region from the 19th century to the present day and is owned and run by SL, the public body responsible for public transport in Stockholm County.
The collections centre on some 70 to 80 vehicles, alongside more than 10,000 historical objects, around 20,000 technical drawings and roughly half a million photographs. It is classed as both a transport museum and a working life museum, meaning it documents the work and workplaces behind the services as well as the machines. It suits anyone curious about how the city's public transport has changed over time.
Ernst Hjortzberg founded the museum in 1922. It was long based at Tegelviksgatan 22 in Södermalm before reopening in its gasworks home in May 2022.
