In Soviet times, anyone who showed an interest in Ivan Honchar's private collection of Ukrainian folk art was registered with the KGB, and Honchar himself was accused of nationalism. That collection became the foundation of the Ivan Honchar Museum, established in Kyiv shortly after his death in 1993.
Officially the National Centre of Folk Culture "Ivan Honchar Museum" (Національний центр народної культури «Музей Івана Гончара»), the museum is devoted to the culture of Ukraine and to preserving Ukrainian folk art. It receives about 35,000 visitors a year and suits anyone interested in Ukrainian folk traditions.
