The 62-metre Mother Ukraine statue, one of Kyiv's best-recognized landmarks, stands at the centre of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in World War II (Національний музей історії України у Другій світовій війні). The memorial complex commemorates the German-Soviet War and occupies hills on the right bank of the Dnipro River, on the southern outskirts of the Pecherskyi District.
It is one of the largest museums in Ukraine, with more than 300,000 exhibits, and has received over 21 million visitors. The complex is listed as a historic monument of local significance.
The museum was moved twice before reaching its present site, where Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev ceremonially opened it on Victory Day, 9 May 1981. On 21 June 1996, a decree signed by President Leonid Kuchma gave it its current status as a national museum.
