Founded on 10 May 1844, the National Museum of Serbia (Narodni muzej Srbije) is the oldest and largest museum in Belgrade. Its collection has grown to more than 400,000 objects, including many masterpieces from abroad.
The museum has occupied its present building since 1950 and formally opened there on 23 May 1952. Designed by the architects Andra Stevanović and Nikola Nestorović, the building fills a square plot in central Belgrade. Its main facade faces Republic Square, formerly Theatre Square, and its other three sides face Čika Ljubina, Vasina and Laze Pačua streets. In 1979 the building was declared a Monument of Culture of Great Importance, one of Serbia's designations for protected heritage.
