Four older institutions make up the Natural History Museum of Denmark (Statens Naturhistoriske Museum): Copenhagen's Zoological Museum, Geological Museum, Botanical Museum and Central Library, and the Botanical Garden. They merged into a single organisation in 2004. The museum is affiliated with the University of Copenhagen, and its collections belong to the Danish state. Under Denmark's Museum Act, it is responsible for managing them and for the research and public outreach connected to them.
Exhibitions are held at the main address on Øster Voldgade 5–7. The museum also runs lectures and events about its collections, the Botanical Garden and its researchers' current work. Its school service offers teaching to students, which makes the museum a natural choice for school groups.
