Rosenborg Castle began in 1606 as a country summerhouse, one of Christian IV's many architectural projects, and was expanded several times before reaching its present form by 1624. Its Danish name, Rosenborg Slot, refers to the rose.
The building is in the Dutch Renaissance style typical of Danish architecture of the period. Architects Bertel Lange and Hans van Steenwinckel the Younger are associated with its planning. Today the palace serves as a museum and is a listed monument on the Danish heritage register.
