Denmark's national art collection began in the Kunstkammer of the Danish kings, and the National Gallery of Denmark, known locally and on signs as Statens Museum for Kunst or simply SMK, still builds on that royal inheritance with European and Danish art from the Renaissance to today. It is the place to see the Danish Golden Age in depth, with paintings by C.W. Eckersberg, Christen Købke and their circle, as well as the quiet interiors of Vilhelm Hammershøi.
Among the European works are Mantegna's Christ as the Suffering Redeemer and pieces by Rembrandt, Rubens and Bruegel. The French collection is especially known for Matisse, including Portrait of Madame Matisse (The Green Line).
Vilhelm Dahlerup's historicist main building from 1896 faces the park of Østre Anlæg. A white modernist extension completed in 1998 holds modern and contemporary art and joins the older wing along a long, glass-roofed sculpture street.
