With roots in the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters, which dates from 1760, the NTNU University Museum (Vitenskapsmuseet) is one of seven Norwegian university museums with both natural history and cultural history collections. It holds research and administrative responsibility for archaeology and biology across Central Norway, which makes it a natural stop for visitors curious about the region's past and its plants and animals.
The exhibits are housed in wooden buildings in Kalvskinnet. The museum also runs two gardens: Ringve Botanical Garden at Lade in Trondheim, and Kongsvoll Alpine Garden in Dovre Municipality.
The museum was closely affiliated with the University of Trondheim from 1968 and has been part of NTNU since 1996. Alongside its exhibits, it runs extensive community outreach programmes, manages archives and takes part in larger research projects, including work with other university museums to digitise collections. In 2010 Norway's Museum Union named it Norway's Museum of the Year.
