China's first and only state-owned contemporary art museum occupies a former power plant on the Huangpu riverside. The Power Station of Art, known in Chinese as 上海当代艺术博物馆 (Shanghai Contemporary Art Museum) and often abbreviated as PSA, stands on the site of the Nanshi Electric Plant, which opened in 1897 and moved here in 1935.
The building served as the Pavilion of Future during Expo 2010. After nine months of conversion, it opened as a museum on 1 October 2012. It has more than 41,000 square metres of floor space, about 15,000 of them given over to exhibitions.
The museum has hosted the Shanghai Biennale since it opened with the 9th edition, Reactivation. Alongside contemporary art, it stages design exhibitions under the name Power Station of Design and has run the Emerging Curators Project since 2014. This makes it a strong choice for visitors interested in contemporary art, design and the work of new curators.
