The Shanghai Railway Museum occupies a replica of the 1909 Shanghai North railway station (上海北站), rebuilt on the same site on East Tianmu Road in Jing'an. For most of the 20th century this was Shanghai's main railway station and one terminal of the Shanghai–Nanjing Railway, before it closed in 1987.
The museum was founded in 2004. The old station tracks remain in use as a coach yard, so the building keeps a working link to the railway it was built to serve. It suits visitors interested in railway history and in the story of one of Shanghai's most important 20th-century transport landmarks.
