Poznań's Old Zoo (Stare Zoo w Poznaniu) can be considered the oldest continuously operating zoological garden in Poland. It began in the early 1870s as a few animals kept by a restaurant owner and was formally founded in 1874. In 1978 it was entered on the register of cultural heritage as a unique example of a vivarium, a place where live animals are kept for observation, and it is protected as an immovable monument.
The Old Zoo forms part of the Zoological Garden in Poznań (Ogród Zoologiczny w Poznaniu), together with the New Zoo, which opened in 1974. It has been a member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria since 1992 and of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums since 1999.
