The private collection of Chilean architect and antiquities collector Sergio Larraín García-Moreno, gathered over nearly fifty years, forms the foundation of the Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art (Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino). The museum is dedicated to the study and display of pre-Columbian artworks and artifacts, from the cultures of the Americas before European contact, drawn from Central and South America.
Larraín García-Moreno wanted a place where his collection could be both shown and preserved. With the support of Santiago's municipal government of the time, he secured a building in the city centre and established the museum's curatorial institution. The museum opened in December 1981 and is designated a Historical Monument of Chile.
