Founded in 1880, the Chilean National Museum of Fine Arts (Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes) is the oldest institution of its kind in South America. It remains one of the major centres for Chilean art and for South American art more broadly, which makes it a natural stop for visitors interested in the region's art.
The museum's home, the Palacio de Bellas Artes, dates to 1910 and commemorates the first centenary of Chile's independence. The Chilean architect Emile Jéquier designed it in a full-blown Beaux-Arts style, and the building is protected as a Historical Monument of Chile. It stands in Santiago's Parque Forestal.
Directly behind it is the University of Chile's Museum of Contemporary Art, which shares its building with the old School of Fine Arts.
