A gigantic genealogical tree of the Franciscan Order, containing 644 miniature portraits, is the standout piece at the Museo Colonial (Colonial Museum). The museum occupies the convent beside San Francisco Church in Santiago. Founded in 1969 and named after Francis of Assisi, it holds the designation of Historical Monument of Chile.
The collection covers the colonial period of Chile and South America through paintings, sculpture, furniture and other objects. Much of it is religious, and many pieces were made in Peru, the former colonial capital. The museum suits visitors interested in colonial art and the religious history of the region.
