Chilean native animals and birds, including rare and endangered species, are the focus of the Chilean National Zoo's most distinctive exhibits. Known locally as the Zoo Nacional de Chile, it sits at the foot of San Cristóbal Hill within the Santiago Metropolitan Park (Parque Metropolitano de Santiago).
Founded in 1925, the zoo covers 4.8 hectares, about 12 acres, and houses thousands of animals from 158 species. Its compact grounds hold a wide range of wildlife alongside its Chilean collection.
The zoo pursues two goals: conserving and researching the species in its care, and educating visitors through activities for the public. That combination suits those curious about Chile's own fauna as well as families and learners who come for its educational programme.
