The only museum in Chile devoted exclusively to the War of the Pacific, the Museum of the War of the Pacific occupies a site in Santiago's Barrio Brasil. Its full name, Museo Guerra del Pacífico Domingo de Toro Herrera, may appear on signs. It is a private history museum and cultural centre, owned and run by a foundation of the same name, and it opened in 2001.
The museum takes its name from Domingo de Toro Herrera, a veteran of the war. He was a politician, engineer and soldier of the Chilean Army who later held political office. His sister, Emilia de Toro Herrera, was First Lady of Chile as the wife of President José Manuel Balmaceda.
