An almost complete woolly mammoth skeleton, found in Nevlje near Kamnik in 1938, is the symbol of the Slovenian Museum of Natural History (Prirodoslovni muzej Slovenije). Founded in 1821, the museum is the oldest cultural and scientific institution in Slovenia and serves as the country's national museum of natural history.
Its national, European and worldwide collections trace changes in biodiversity and the development of natural history thought. They also show the different techniques used to collect and prepare specimens. The museum's research centres on Slovenia's natural heritage, and since 1978 it has published the journal Scopolia, named after the 18th-century Carniolan naturalist Giovanni Antonio Scopoli.
The museum shares an 1885 building with the National Museum of Slovenia on Muzejska ulica, near Tivoli Park, the Parliament and the Opera House. The building was designed by the Viennese architect Wilhelm Rezori and built by the Ljubljana master builder Wilhelm Treo.
